bookworm way of things

My ramblings on books, miscellaneous and nonystematic. Romance, YA, paranormal, fantasy urban and not, sci-fi and everything in between.
It's in His Kiss - Caitie Quinn I have only one complaint - why so short?! I want mooore.
Virtuosity - Jessica Martinez 3.5 stars. I really liked It. But it could be so much better. It was fascinating to read about teenagers with such single minded purpose in life. Never in my life had I that drive, that passion about anything. That's why I enjoy reading about it so much. That alone gave the book 2.5 stars. The situation with controlling parents actually hits too close to home. Here goes another 1 star. I rarely dissect my opinion in stars. But this one is different and I am not too sure if it is a good thing. I felt that the conflict was rather watered down for Ya. It IS YA,and maybe it is not fair of me to get picky on it. I don't know why I expected *darker and more realistic*. The potential of drug addiction on anxiety relieving meds, scheming with final results of competition is endless. But everything seemed watered down somehow. I used a lot of buts in this review, because this book is a *but* itself. It is good, really good but something is not quite right, not quite there.
Hounded - Kevin Hearne Only 3 stars. I was a little dissapointed in this book. It hold such promise with 2000 years old Druid, but the story line was simple and fairly straightforward. The only good thing is dialogs between Oberon and Atticus. They were snarky and witty and just plain geniusly written. And only because of them the book got its 3 stars. I would like to read a book from Oberon's point of view. I felt that Atticus was a touch bit untouchable and too powerful. There is nothing wrong with this concept generally, look at Jim Butcher's Dresden - I adore this series. But main hero takes thorough beating before evil is punished. Here Druid is too powerful it doesn't even hold interest in how he will get out from sticky situation.
The Knife of Never Letting Go - Patrick Ness Oh, wow!
Prince of Thorns - Mark Lawrence It is one of these books, that you hate or love at first page. I happened to fall in the second category. Hence the rating. I was appalled by the main character at first. I mean I love mean and heroes who knows what they want and do whatever they need to achieve their goal without unnessesary weeping and soul searching. But 14 years old torturing and raping is astonishing at first. But you'll get used to it...or not. I got my pet peeves such as a little too grown up attitude from Jorge.
Circle of Enemies - Harry Connolly I don't know what about this series that doesn't drive me in. It has everything I love in this kind of books - a hero, that isn't really a hero - just an ordinary person trying to deal with everything that life throws at him. An endless torrent of action. An interesting plot. All sorts of paranormal creatures. But it doesn't have me as it should. I like this book, I really do. I will read the next one and maybe I will now what it is that bothers me so much.
Lola and the Boy Next Door - Stephanie Perkins Simple and light read. Very alike to Anna and French kiss.
Shade - Jeri Smith-Ready This book should have gotten 4 stars, but alas only 3.5. It has original world, described with wide strokes. 0.5 minus for perfect Zachary. I hate this sort of perfection- without any flaws - funny, kind, patient and perfect..ugh - to the point of unreal. I felt the mutual attraction between Aura and Zachary is to sudden and book sort of skips the steps of falling in like. it just sort of there one moment. On the other hand there is splendid written situation of letting go between Logan and Aura. Cliffhanger won't made you lose sleep waiting for continuation, but I will follow the series nonetheless.
Midnight Riot - Ben Aaronovitch Well, that was different. It wasn't a book I couldn't put down. But still some charm was there. London was as stand alone character as any one of the people. I never was to London.and never wanted to go there. But after reading this book I'll go someday. I have something to say about sense of humor. It is there- witty and full of self irony. It's refreshing. I'm definitively going to read the next in the series.
Nevermore - Kelly Creagh That was absolutely amazing. It's how the ideal YA should look like. Couldn't put the book down..ooh it was so atmospheric...just like the movie Raven. Blend between supernatural and normal life is so perfect that you have a hard time destinguish the two. There is no character that is simple black or white, or two dimensional. I don't know how I am going to wait for the next book in the series. 5 stars through and through.
You Wish - Mandy Hubbard This book deserve its five stars. I don't know what drawn me in it. Maybe a little piece of childhood when everything was so simple and the biggest wish for birthday was a pink pony. Maybe it was the character of Kayla - I can actually see a little of myself in her. Or maybe healthy dose of humor. Or maybe all of the above.
Anna and the French Kiss - Stephanie Perkins I liked this book. It was so fluffy and fun. Very light read, cliched too, but self irony saves it from being just another plotless ya.
Goliath - Scott Westerfeld, Keith Thompson I read this trilogy in one go. And I am glad I did. I am not into steampunk that much. But this book has some sort of charm. The characters were well written, even backstage ones. What I liked the most is the way the love story was introduced. It was subtle and more in hints and subtle strokes than bluntly - love at first sight. Really the heroes have more pressing matters. I am giving it 5 stars. I am going to follow other series of this author.
Forbidden - Ted Dekker, Tosca Lee Hm, I will refrain from giving stars, as I actually dropped the book after a second half. I honestly can't see why it has such good rating. The idea is great I'll give you that. But realization could have been better. The characters are naive, illogical and just plain boring. This book hit all my pet peeves I have and some I never knew I had. I nearly screamed after yet another comment from Rom:"We are dead, everyone is dead". Alright, I got it ALREADY, after first 10 times you said that. Whoohoo, I got it out of my system.
Nope, Forbidden is really not my book.
My Soul to Take - Rachel Vincent I liked it well enough. But insta-love ruined it for me juat a little. But series are worth keep following.
Deadline - Mira Grant This is a second book in the series. And as the first book it isn't your typical zombie-story. There is even less zombie-action compared to "Feed". The main character is Shaun, but it isn't the Shaun we all knew and loved from ""Fedd". He is broken and crazy as a fox. First half of the book was a bit slow paced. But second half made it up to me - tension was mounting in unbelievable rate. My advise - if you hasn't read deadline yet - wait till the 3d book will come out. Because this one ends with huge cliffhanger.
